Li Chang, a close aide to Xi Jinping, China’s President, has been appointed as the country’s Premier and the second-in-command of the State Council, according to the National People’s Congress.

The 64-year-old Li, who hails from the southeastern province of Jiangsu and has a background in economic management, was elected as a member of the Central Political Bureau last year.

He is widely regarded as a key player in China’s economic policymaking.

As the Premier, Li will be responsible for implementing President Xi’s policies for at least the next five years, and could serve for up to ten years.
