Volkswagen plans to build its first gigafactory outside of Europe in southwestern Ontario, Canada.
The plant will be dedicated to producing batteries for electric vehicles and is expected to be operational by 2027.
The facility will be situated in St.
Thomas, just south of London.
Canada’s Industry Minister, Francois-Philippe Champagne, called the announcement historic, stating that it is a clear indication that Canada is fast becoming a leader in the production of electric vehicles and their supply chains.
The move is set to provide a significant boost to Canada’s auto sector, with the production expected to generate billions of dollars in revenue.
