The Savannah area and the Lowcountry will be honoring our nation’s veterans throughout the entire weekend. The city of Savannah will be hosting a parade at 9:30 AM this morning starting at the intersection of Abercorn and Gwinnett Streets. The staging area will be located between Gwinnett Street and Park Avenue.
Habersham and Drayton Streets will be closed starting at 6 AM. Vehicles found in the no-park zones will be towed at the owner’s expense. As part of the tribute, the city will line Broughton Street with flags that once draped the caskets of fallen soldiers. Chatham Area Transit will be adjusting some of its fixed routes due to street closures for today’s events. All downtown-bound buses will travel to Henry Street westbound, M-L-K northbound, and then to the Joe Murray Rivers, Jr.
Intermodal Transit Center. All CAT D-O-T Trolleys will also suspend operations from 9-12 during the parade.
The American Legion Post 205 of Bluffton will begin their Veterans Day parade at 10 AM this morning, traveling down Alljoy Road to Calhoun Street, through Promenade Street, and ending at Doctor Mellichamp Drive. Mayor Pro Tem Fred Hamilton will serve as this year’s Grand Marshal. Hilton Head Island will also have its own Veterans Day celebration at 10:30 AM this morning at the Veterans Memorial Park on Shelter Cove Lane.
The co-founders of “Operation Patriot Forward Operating Base” will give the keynote address. If you are a veteran, businesses across the nation will be offering free meals in honor of Veterans Day. Applebee’s is providing a free entrée for active duty military, veterans, and national guard members dining in-restaurant.
Dunkin Donuts is giving away a free donut, and Krispy Kreme is offering free coffee and a donut. Starbucks will also be offering free coffee..
