Former Chicago Public Schools CEO, Paul Vallas, and former school teacher, Brandon Johnson, clashed over issues of policing and education during a televised debate on Thursday night.

The event, hosted by ABC 7 in partnership with the League of Women Voters and Univision, marked the candidates’ second televised debate before the runoff election.

Johnson emphasized his plan to double the amount of young people hired to reduce crime and create economic stability, while Vallas attacked Johnson’s alleged support for defunding the police and his record leading school districts in Philadelphia and New Orleans.

The candidates also discussed their approaches to reducing youth crime and increasing educational opportunities.

The next mayoral debate is scheduled for Tuesday and will be moderated by local news anchors.
