Two Whatcom County deputies who were shot in the head by a suspect last year have received the Medal of Honor for Exceptional Meritorious Conduct and Serious Injury While in the Performance of Duty.
The deputies, Ryan Rathbone and Jason Thompson, were honored for their bravery when a gunman opened fire on neighbors.
They rushed in to help despite the danger, and both survived gunshot wounds.

The incident began with a 911 call reporting the gunman’s presence in the neighborhood.
Deputy Rathbone and Deputy Thompson were the first to respond, arriving minutes apart.
As they were discussing their approach, the suspect, identified as a six-year-old named Young, taunted the deputies from inside a building.
At 4:42 p.m., Young fired the first shot from his 12-gauge shotgun, hitting Deputy Thompson in the face with pellets.
Despite being injured, Thompson retreated while Deputy Rathbone fired back at the suspect, also sustaining a gunshot wound in the process.
Another neighbor, Cody Deter, came to their aid and provided backup until further assistance arrived.
With injuries and impaired vision, the deputies managed to make their way to their SUV for safety.
They relied on their training and took care of each other throughout the ordeal.
Two minutes past six, Young surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.
The deputies credit their resilience and determination for getting them through the harrowing experience.
