Three people were killed in a tragic car accident that occurred early Sunday morning in Hardeman County.

According to DPS Sergeant Dan Busing, the accident happened at around 3:15 am on Highway 287, about 10 miles west of Kawana.

A semi-trailer heading southbound collided with a pickup truck that was attempting to make a left turn to go south on the highway from the center median crossover.

The pickup truck failed to yield the right-of-way to the trailer, which hit the passenger side of the truck, causing it to come to rest in the center median on the driver’s side.

The trailer caught fire and was completely destroyed while the pickup truck was badly damaged.

The driver and passenger of the pickup truck, identified as Johanna Garcia Lazo, 32, and Reinner Garcia, 33, both from Florida, were unable to exit the vehicle and were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck, 23-year-old Jack Poole of Lubbock, was transported to Quanah but was later airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock, where he was pronounced dead on Sunday evening.

The accident is a tragic reminder of the importance of following traffic rules and exercising caution while driving.
