Topeka Native, Bob Miller Honored for Keeping Soldiers at Sea Informed

Bob Miller, a Topeka native, has been honored for his military service as a Communications Yeoman in the United States Navy.

Miller’s journey took him across the globe, serving in Naval Communications to help those at sea get the updates they needed to hear.

Miller saw the military as an opportunity to travel and see the world.

He served in the Philippine Islands, Japan, Hawaii, and Guam, learning how important every role contributing towards a common goal truly is.

As a Communications Yeoman, Miller would receive messages from ships and planes at sea, transmitting the report directly to the group that would take action.

Miller also had the responsibility to deliver the best or worst news imaginable to sailors at sea.

Sometimes they were happy news, like the birth of a child, and sometimes they were sad news, like the passing of a loved one.

If Miller didn’t send these messages, it might be three weeks before the sailor received a letter telling them that a parent or sibling had passed away.

Approximately 90 percent of military jobs are support roles, from communication and supply to mechanics and cooks.

Miller understands that these support roles are essential for those on the line, and if a role is not completed correctly, it can cost people.

Today, Miller stays plenty active, keeping that traveling spirit alive by visiting new places around the country with his wife of 50 years.

On behalf of Devon James injury lawyers, 27 News honors Bob Miller for his service and commitment to keeping soldiers at sea informed.
