The state of Texas has announced that it will be closing its rent relief program’s application portal after just two days of it being open due to an overwhelming response.

The program’s website reported that the demand for assistance in the first 24 hours of the portal being opened “far exceeded available funding,” with over 70,000 people applying within that time frame.

This figure is well beyond what was expected and has forced the state to close the application process much earlier than expected.

The program was initially set to accept applications until March 28th but the window to apply closes tomorrow morning at 11:59 A.M.

Those who have already applied will still be considered for assistance, but no further applications will be accepted.

The high demand for the program is indicative of the ongoing economic struggles faced by many Texans during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the urgent need for financial relief programs.
