South Carolina authorities are investigating the death of Stephen Smith as a homicide, eight years after he was found dead along a rural road in the Lowcountry.

Smith, who was 19 years old at the time, was discovered lying in the middle of Sandy Run Road on July 8, 2015, a few miles from where his car had run out of gas.

His death was originally ruled a hit and run, but new evidence has now led to it being classified as a homicide.

Smith’s mother, Sandy, is seeking answers and a new investigation, while the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has assigned more agents to the case in the hope that people may now be more willing to come forward with information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact SLED’s Investigative Services.
