State Unveils New Solution to Hawaii’s Homelessness Issue

In an effort to address Hawaii’s ongoing homelessness crisis, the state government has unveiled a new solution aimed at providing comprehensive medical care for individuals experiencing homelessness.

The initiative, known as Kauhale for Medical Services, aims to prevent homeless individuals from ending up back on the streets and reduce the burden on local hospitals.

Reports indicate that more than 200 homeless individuals are being released from local hospitals every month, requiring ongoing medical care.

The back-and-forth trips to emergency rooms not only disrupt the individuals’ lives but also incur substantial costs.

Governor Green emphasized the financial impact, stating that the average cost for an individual in such a condition amounts to $80,000 per person per year.

To prevent homeless individuals from being sent back onto the streets, the state plans to set up 12 Kauhale or tiny structures dedicated to providing medical care on Oahu.

The first six structures are set to arrive this Tuesday.

The Governor’s Coordinator on Homelessness outlined the range of services that will be available, including case management, 24/7 on-site assistance, intake services, and regular rounds by nurses and registered nurses (RNs).

While the government’s plan aims to transition the homeless into community facilities, challenges persist in finding enough bed space.

Meanwhile, the City’s Homeless Resource Center in Iwilei remains locked, awaiting operation on the first floor.

The facility, which cost $17.2 million, has been vacant due to funding issues.

However, a portion of the facility will be dedicated to stabilization services and meeting the health needs of the homeless population.

The medical respite Kauhale is expected to be fully operational by the end of this month.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in addressing Hawaii’s homelessness issue by providing crucial medical care and support to those in need.

The state government recognizes the importance of stabilization services and aims to bridge the existing gaps in community facilities.

By implementing these measures, they strive to create a lasting solution that offers hope and assistance to the homeless population.
