San Francisco jail has opened a new space for children to visit their incarcerated parents, transformed from a storage room.
The room, called The Beehive, is now a vibrant playroom filled with toys and games, and is a symbol of a healthy and thriving community.
Maintaining relationships with people who are close is important for children to avoid feeling a sense of loss, according to Chief Deputy Lizette Adams.
Parent-child visitation has been arranged since 1995 but this is the first dedicated room with toys and games.
The creation of The Beehive is a community collaboration aimed at ending the cycle of intergenerational incarceration.
The end product, according to one mother, is like honey – something sweet, healing, and something that nobody complains about.
