Seven employees of a Virginia sheriff’s office have been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a 28-year-old man at a state mental hospital.

Attorney Ben Crump spoke about the incident on Thursday, saying that “we’re better than this America” and that the laws need to be changed to prevent such tragedies from happening again.

The victim, Irvo Otieno, died while in the custody of the sheriff’s office employees, who were supposed to be caring for him.

The incident has raised questions about the treatment of mentally ill individuals in the criminal justice system and has sparked calls for reform.

The video of Crump’s speech was released via CNN Newsource.
