Rideshare drivers in Chicago rallied outside of an Uber hub on the North Side to demand better pay, job security, and safety.
The drivers complained about their pay and unfair working conditions, and also expressed concerns about the company’s lack of action to keep their drivers safe.
The drivers are facing dangerous conditions on the job, with several sharing stories of incidents where they felt unsafe or were attacked.
The city is considering an ordinance that would require rideshare companies to provide fair wages, due process for deactivation of driver accounts, and better safety protocols.
Uber responded to the protest by stating that a recent study showed that all full-time drivers make more than $20 an hour after expenses and a quarter of drivers make more than $29 an hour after expenses.
The company did not address the issue of safety.
