In Washington DC, a man was arrested by the police for wielding a weapon. Mark Meredith is reporting on this incident.
The arrest took place near the US Senate Office Buildings in a park between the Capitol and Union Station, the main train station in DC. The suspect is currently in a white police car labeled US Capital police, while officers search through his personal belongings and the surrounding park.
Reports came in around 1:00 this afternoon, notifying Capitol Police of a man with a gun. Although there were suggestions of a rifle being involved, this has not been confirmed.
After a foot chase, the suspect was apprehended and is now in custody. Given the high security level around Capitol Hill, especially in the area where many pedestrians pass through to and from Union Station, additional law enforcement resources have been deployed. It is yet unknown whether the suspect arrived in a vehicle or on foot.
Authorities will be investigating the area to ensure nothing was left behind. At this point, it appears that there was only one individual involved in this incident. The suspect is currently being interviewed by detectives, but no information regarding motive or any threats to the US Capitol has been disclosed yet. Washington DC generally has a heightened security presence..
