Racine Police Department announced the arrest of a suspect in a 23-year-old cold case homicide of Linda Fields.

Fields’ body was found by a woman walking her dog in January 2000, a block from Lake Michigan.

The case remained unsolved until recently when investigator Chris Blackmore was assigned to it.

Blackmore relied heavily on DNA evidence and worked collaboratively with multiple Wisconsin State departments, including the FBI and the Milwaukee crime lab.

The suspect, 66-year-old Lucas Alonso, was found through familial DNA testing and was arrested earlier this month.

The ACLU expressed concerns about privacy but the arrest was made nonetheless.

Blackmore pushed back his retirement to work on Fields’ case, and it will be his last.

Fields’ murder was one of 14 unsolved murders on Racine Police Department’s website.
