Houston police say that a driver is dead following a shootout during a standoff near the Southwest Freeway and Highway 90 early Wednesday.
The incident began as a police chase and ended near Sugarland where Highway 90 crosses under the Southwest Freeway.
The standoff lasted nearly an hour and a half.
According to police chief Troy Fenner, seven HPD officers are now on administrative leave after they shot and killed an armed suspect, but only after the suspect shot first.
The suspect is a 27-year-old man whose family members were on the scene and were on the phone with him during the incident.
The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office is now taking over the investigation.
As a result, Highway 59 and Highway 90 are still blocked for traffic.
