In the Northbound Lanes of the Southwest Freeway near the Chimney Rock exit, a deadly shootout occurred following a car chase which resulted in a Houston police officer being hospitalized. The incident took place on late Saturday morning when the police noticed a car that had been carjacked on Friday. The driver of the stolen car attempted to escape, causing multiple car collisions. As the suspect exited the crashed vehicle, he tried to enter nearby cars, including mine, but was unable to due to the locked doors.
At that moment, he positioned himself behind my car and was seen by another police officer who alerted that an officer was injured. The suspect continued to move towards the injured officer’s position without stopping, prompting the officers to shoot him in self-defense. Bystander videos capture the scene of citizens assisting the wounded officer and moving him away from harm’s way. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner commended the citizen who helped the injured officer, highlighting the importance of recognizing people’s potential for rehabilitation after making mistakes.
The wounded officer, a 29-year-old with 5 years of experience in the department, was shot in the leg but is expected to fully recover..
