A 41-year-old woman from Bay County, Florida, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the manslaughter of her nine-week-old grandson.

Mary Elizabeth Evans admitted to overdosing on fentanyl in June 2021, before collapsing onto the child and smothering him to death.

Evans pled guilty to the crime and was sentenced by circuit court judge Dustin Stevenson on Friday.

While the prosecution requested the maximum 30-year sentence, the defense requested 13 years, which was below the minimum for sentencing guidelines.

Judge Stevenson ultimately sentenced Evans to 22 years in prison.
