One person is in custody after a police shooting occurred near the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach on Sunday, April 16, 2023.
The incident prompted street closures in the downtown Long Beach business district due to law enforcement activity.
Police believe that the man taken into custody is responsible for three shootings in the area that afternoon.
The police were responding to a call for a shooting near 3rd and Elm when they located the suspect a few blocks away at Ocean Elm.
An officer-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.
A handgun was recovered at the scene, and no officers were injured.
The city of Long Beach is hosting a weekend-long Indy Car series, making the situation especially dangerous as fans from around the country are in town.
Two other shootings were reported in the downtown area, and Long Beach police are investigating whether all three incidents are related.
The police have not yet determined the motive for the shootings.
