Ohio lawmakers are considering increasing the speed limit on state routes and county roads from 55 to 60 mph, with the potential for two-lane roads to be increased to 65 mph.
The proposed bill also grants authority to the Ohio Department of Transportation to increase the speed limit on two-lane state routes.
While some argue that it will reduce the number of tickets issued, others believe that it will increase the risk of severe injury or death, with a dramatic increase in risk going from 60% at 50 mph to 80% at 55 mph.
The bill will be further discussed next week at the state house, and townships and counties will have the ability to lower the speed limit if needed.
