The incident took place on the Northbound Lanes of the Southwest Freeway near the Chimney Rock exit. The suspect was driving a vehicle that had been stolen in a carjacking the previous day. During the police chase, the suspect was involved in a violent crash with several cars.
After the crash, the suspect opened fire at the police officers while attempting to enter another vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle, whose doors were locked, described the tense moment when the suspect tried to open his door.
However, the suspect was eventually shot by the officers. Bystanders were seen moving the injured officer aside in a video. Houston police chief Troy praised the citizen who assisted the injured officer. He acknowledged that the citizen had a troubled past with law enforcement but emphasized the importance of reformation and giving people a chance. The injured officer, a 29-year-old who has been with the department for 5 years, is expected to fully recover from a gunshot wound to the leg..
