Oakland teachers went on strike on Thursday as they continue to be among the lowest-paid in Alameda County.
The union is asking for a 23% pay raise for all teachers, while the district has offered a 22% increase for the most tenured staff, calling it structured salary increases.
Currently, Oakland teachers are making an average range of $52,000 to more than $94,000 per year for veteran teachers, which is less compared to other districts in the Bay Area.
The average salary at Oakland Unified falls at the very bottom by a considerable amount, according to the Bay Area News Group.
However, a state lawmaker recently introduced a bill that would give the power of teacher salaries from districts to the state, potentially increasing teachers and staff’s pay by 50% by 2030.
The bill is moving through the state assembly this week.
