Body cam video of the January 6 shooting at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, has been released by the Newport News Police Department.

The footage, obtained by sister station WTKR, shows officers responding to the incident and leading students out of the building.

In an effort to distract the children from the traumatic event, some officers can be seen high-fiving the students and pretending to give them rides on motorcycles.

Officer Clark Carter, who helped escort the children to safety, recalled the day vividly and stated that their goal was to provide the students with something to take their minds off the shooting.

The release of this video comes shortly after the shooter’s mother issued an apology for her six-year-old child’s actions.
