New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell expressed relief after a recall effort against her fell short.

The recall organizers had submitted over 67,000 signatures to the Registrar of Voters office, but only 27,000 were validated as qualified electors by the governor’s office.

This fell far short of the required 44,900 validated signatures needed to trigger a special election to oust the mayor.

In response to the news, Mayor Cantrell thanked the residents who understood that work was being done and who wanted to see the work continue throughout her administration.

She also thanked the employees of the City of New Orleans who listened to her call to action for them to stay focused and not be distracted by the “foolishness” and everything that had been coming at her directly.

The mayor also revealed that she is in the process of writing a book.
