This morning, King Charles prepared to open Parliament as the Monarch. He traveled from Buckingham Palace to Westminster, symbolically protected by his sister Princess Anne, who had the role of gold stick in waiting. Once there, King Charles sat on a gilded Throne and read out the King’s speech. This year, he also wore the crown, which last year he had worn in place of his late mother, Queen Elizabeth, who held this role for seven decades. Meanwhile, Prince William, next in line for the throne, was on a whirlwind trip leading up to the earthshot Awards.
He had some fun in Singapore overnight, meeting with the finalists before the awards were officially announced. He expressed his support and desire to amplify their impacts.
The earthshot prize, now in its third year, recognizes innovative solutions to the planet’s biggest challenges. Prince William’s goal is to bring funding and support from the private sector to scale up these solutions. The Awards were presented by a star-studded lineup, including Kate Blanchett.
One Republic and Jacinda Ardern were spotted on the Green carpet. However, the Princess of Wales was missing this year, as she had been last seen in Boston. Each winner of the earthshot prize receives a grant of one million pounds (approximately $1.2 million) for their innovative projects. This year’s Awards showcased big dreams and ambitions. Prince William’s enthusiasm for these Awards was clear, although there was disappointment that Kate was not on the Green carpet.
The full Awards ceremony can be watched on PBS on Sunday. Thank you for watching and don’t forget to catch the Today show on our streaming channel, Today All Day. For more information, visit today.com/allay or click the link provided..
