A mental health crisis on the Bay Bridge resulted in a nine-hour traffic backup that led to the death of two people caught in the congestion.

The crisis began on Thursday morning when police negotiators spent the night attempting to talk a man off the bridge.

The man was eventually taken off the bridge and is now undergoing a mental health evaluation.

However, the traffic backup caused a crash involving a big rig and a Dodge Charger, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.

All lanes on the bridge were closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage and police negotiated with the man.

Although the man was eventually removed from the bridge and all lanes were reopened, the residual traffic is expected to continue for some time.
