Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler joined residents of Montavilla neighborhood for a town hall meeting to discuss proposed sanctioned camping sites aimed at addressing the city’s homelessness crisis.

The meeting was organized by community reporter Angela Taj, who runs a site called PDX Real.

The mayor answered questions about the city’s plans to install six sanctioned tent sites, including two alternative shelters along SE 82nd Avenue that will provide safe park sites for people living in their cars.

The mayor also addressed a question about why safe camp proposals are always set in lower-income areas.

The meeting ended with a call for community involvement in decisions regarding the homelessness crisis in Portland.

Earlier this month, the city announced the first of those mass encampments would be at Southeast Powell and 13th.
