A five-alarm fire broke out in Old Montreal this morning, causing extensive damage to a three-story building that housed a business on the ground floor and condos above.

More than 100 firefighters were called to the scene to battle the strong flames and smoke, and nearby buildings had to be evacuated out of precaution.

Nine people were injured and one person is missing.

Four people were rescued via a portable ladder and two were lifted to safety via an aerial ladder.

Three of the injured suffered serious wounds and injuries from inhaling smoke and burns to their hands and face.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is an historical building.

The fire department is expected to provide an update on the situation later.
