“Five News at 10 begins now.” Kaitlyn: “Our top story tonight in Atlanta is a destructive fire that continues to smolder. We have a shocking picture of the scene from last night.
Thank you for joining us for Fox Five News at 10, Perry. Tonight, dozens of residents are without a home after a fire ripped through the La Vista Walk Apartment complex. Take a look at this drone video from Sky Foxx. It shows the massive presence and destructive damage at the scene.
We have learned that two people are in custody. Police believe they set off fireworks on top of the building, causing the fire.
Now let’s go live to our reporter, Eric Mark, who is at the scene almost 24 hours later. Eric, what can you tell us about the situation tonight?” Reporter: “Eric, it’s still a very active scene here.
La Vista Road has been blocked off since last night, and fire crews continue to battle the flames. The damage to the apartment complex is extensive, and they are still working to extinguish hot spots that keep flaring up. It’s clear that this fire was huge and incredibly destructive.
People are now trying to figure out their next steps, such as where they will stay and when they can return home if their units were undamaged. Firefighters have been putting out hot spots at the Reserve Apartments at La Vista Walk. I spoke with residents who were briefly allowed back in to gather their belongings and pets. One resident described the surreal experience of watching her complex burn and expressed uncertainty about when they will be able to return.
The Red Cross has set up a shelter for displaced people at the Central Park Recreation Center, although there weren’t many people staying there when we visited earlier today.”.
