In a joint operation, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have made significant arrests targeting the Mexican Mafia in the Harbor area.
Multiple members and associates of local street gangs were apprehended on charges related to firearms trafficking and the distribution of large quantities of fentanyl and other narcotics.
The operation, named “Operation Wipeout,” commenced in December 2020, focusing on the most dangerous gang members in the Harbor area and their associates.
The investigation revealed that some of the gang members were collaborating with the cartel even from behind bars.
A total of 11 individuals were taken into custody, facing charges related to narcotics and weapons offenses.
Law enforcement officials disclosed the seizure of a substantial amount of illicit substances, including over 50 pounds of methamphetamine, approximately 23,000 fentanyl pills, more than five pounds of powdered fentanyl, and 23 firearms, including ghost guns.
The FBI and LAPD emphasized the impact of these arrests on community safety, as each firearm confiscated was intended for use by violent criminals.
The dismantling of the leadership within these dangerous gangs is expected to make the Harbor area a safer place for residents.
Despite the success of the operation, authorities are still searching for three fugitives associated with these criminal activities.
The public is urged to provide any relevant information to law enforcement immediately.
The collaboration between the LAPD and the FBI marks a significant step towards reducing gang activity in Harbor City.
