House committees to investigate Manhattan DA’s probe into Trump, says McCarthy

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced on Twitter that House committees will be investigating the Manhattan district attorney’s investigation into former President Donald Trump.

This announcement came after Trump posted on his newly launched social media platform, Truth Social, that he will be arrested on Tuesday.

McCarthy’s tweet has received reactions mainly from allies of the former president, including congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who supports Trump potentially running for president in 2024.

Greene praised McCarthy’s directive, saying that the House Republicans will not tolerate the Democrats’ “weaponization of government and political persecution.” It is noteworthy that McCarthy’s announcement was made to appeal to the hard-right members of his party who have a significant influence on the party at this moment.

While it is uncertain what specific steps the House committees will take, it is significant that McCarthy plans to use federal committees to investigate something happening at the local level.

Meanwhile, Republican leader McConnell has not yet commented on the matter.
