Woman Renders Aid to Savannah Construction Worker Hit by Truck
In a shocking incident that took place yesterday morning, a construction worker was hit by a truck outside the Chatham County Courthouse in Savannah.
The crash occurred at approximately 10 a.m., leaving one man severely injured and requiring immediate medical attention.
Sarah Burris, a paralegal at the Brooks Law Office on York Street, sprang into action after hearing the collision from her office on the second floor.
Acting on instinct, she swiftly ran towards the courthouse upon hearing someone scream for medical help.
“I pretty much hit autopilot, I guess you could say,” Burris stated, describing her quick response to the emergency.
Burris, who has a military background, utilized her training when faced with the unexpected situation.
She recounted hearing the engine rev and tires screeching before a loud crash, which turned out to be the result of a 71-year-old woman attempting to put her parked Ford F150 into drive but inadvertently accelerating rapidly.
The vehicle crashed through an open construction fence, ultimately striking the construction worker.
As one of the first individuals on the scene, Burris initially noticed the distressed woman in the truck, who was pleading for the injured man’s well-being.
Burris then directed her attention towards the fenced area, where she discovered the construction worker lying on the ground with severe injuries.
Assessing the situation, she quickly recognized the need to control the bleeding from the worker’s leg.
Drawing from her military training in the Navy, Burris improvised a tourniquet using a stranger’s belt, effectively stabilizing the injured man until emergency medical services (EMS) arrived.
She explained that during her time in the Navy, they were taught various first aid techniques using different parts of their uniforms, which enabled her to act promptly and decisively in this critical moment.
With the help of several others at the scene, Burris ensured that the injured man remained conscious and responsive until EMS personnel arrived.
The construction worker was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where he continues to receive treatment.
Burris expressed her deep concern for the man’s well-being, stating, “Honestly, my biggest concern is him.
I want him to be okay, I want him to come back from this.”
As of now, no charges have been filed in relation to the incident, and authorities are still investigating the crash.
The focus remains on the recovery of the construction worker, whose condition is being closely monitored by medical professionals.
