In a heated session at the Florida Capitol, lawmakers voted to advance a proposed 6-week abortion ban, bringing it closer to the governor’s desk.
The bill, which cuts down Florida’s current law from 15 to 6 weeks, was met with strong resistance from abortion advocates who fear the loss of reproductive rights.
Nearly 150 people signed up to speak at the committee meeting, with many opposing the bill feeling unheard.
The Senate Bill’s sponsor argues that abortion is “the atrocity of our generation” and cites devaluing life as a cause of the violence epidemic in Florida.
However, even if the bill is signed into law by the governor, its fate hinges on a current case in the Florida Supreme Court.
