A deadly fire that occurred at an apartment building in Yonkers on Wednesday was likely caused by an electric heating lamp being used by a resident to grow marijuana, according to police officials.

Investigators have determined that the hot lamp, which was being used to grow six pot plants for personal use, broke off its support and crashed to the floor, shattering and starting the fire.

A 67-year-old man died in the fire and more than 40 people were injured, mostly firefighters.

The incident has prompted calls for more regulation of high-powered growing lamps and equipment used for marijuana cultivation.
