A massive pileup on I-96 in Ionia County, Michigan has forced the freeway to close in both directions between mile marker 73 and mile marker 76, according to the Michigan State Police.
The pileup involved more than 50 cars, as confirmed by the Portland Area Fire Authority.
The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of the highway, closing about three miles of highway between Grand River and Portland Township.
However, another crash has now occurred in the westbound lanes, and the freeway has been shut down in both directions.
Witnesses have reported that the road conditions were good before the accident, but within moments, whiteout conditions appeared.
Crews are still responding to the scene, and the local roads are congested as a result.
