Deputy Joshua Owen, a dedicated law enforcement officer, was shot and killed on his birthday on Saturday night in Minnesota.
He had been trying to make an arrest with another sheriff’s deputy and a police officer when the suspect opened fire on them.
Deputy Owen, who had served with the Pope County Sheriff’s Office for almost 12 years, was the first officer to be fatally shot in Minnesota this year.
He was remembered by his friends and colleagues for his big heart, big smile, and his commitment to his family, brotherhood, and community.
He leaves behind a wife and a son.
The other deputy and police officer who were also shot are expected to recover.
The suspect has not been identified yet, but the BCA is investigating the incident and plans to release the names of the injured officers and the body camera footage in the future.
The small town is in shock and mourning the loss of a brother and a hero.
