A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 hit southern Ecuador and northern Peru over the weekend, causing extensive damage and claiming the lives of at least 14 people.

Rescuers are currently searching for survivors amidst the rubble of homes and businesses.

The earthquake was so strong that it was captured on video inside a supermarket, causing terror amongst the customers.

Of the 14 reported fatalities, 13 occurred in Ecuador and one in Peru.

The situation is being closely monitored by authorities as they work to provide aid and assistance to those affected.
