2019, three police officers in Kenosha County were allowed to return to their jobs after it was determined by the district attorney that they would not face criminal charges in relation to a man’s suicide in the back of a police car. While they are no longer facing criminal charges, the officers are still under scrutiny as an administrative review is being conducted to determine if they violated department policy leading up to the man’s death. The district attorney confirmed that the officers initially searched the man after his arrest at a hotel, but determined a more thorough search should be done at the jail. The district attorney revealed that squad car video footage showed the man, who was handcuffed in the backseat, pull out a gun from his waistband and shoot himself in the head.
Some people are skeptical of this account, questioning how a gun was missed during the initial search. The initial statement from the police mentioned that the officers missed the gun in their first and only search, and it is unclear if their decision not to conduct a second search before transporting the man to jail aligns with department policy..
