Controversy over “shameless and calculated” political reform
The political reform currently under debate has caused quite a stir due to its controversial provisions.
One such provision would allow congressmen to resign from their positions in order to accept a job in the national government, only to later return to their legislative seat if they so choose.
Several congressmen have announced their opposition to this proposal, and are calling on their colleagues and the national government to remove these “micos,” or hidden clauses, from the reform.
While the closed-list system will remain in place for the 2026 elections, the reform also includes an immediate re-election provision for current congressmen on closed-lists.
Critics argue that this reform is shameless and calculated, designed to win the favor of current congressmen by guaranteeing their seats in the next election.
The motivations behind these “micos” and whose interests they serve remain to be seen.
