Contaminated Eyedrops Linked to Three Deaths and Vision Loss, CDC Issues Urgent Warning

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have issued an urgent warning about contaminated eyedrops that have been linked to three deaths and extensive vision loss.

The tainted product, EzriCare Artificial Tears eyedrops, was recalled earlier this year after it was found to be contaminated with a rare antibiotic-resistant bacterial strain.

According to NBC News medical reporter Erica Edwards, the CDC has identified 68 patients in 16 states who have been affected by the contaminated eyedrops.

Some patients have experienced vision loss, and several have had to undergo corneal transplants or even have their eyes removed altogether.

The majority of cases occurred before the first warning was issued in January, but the CDC anticipates uncovering more cases as investigations continue.

The CDC advises anyone who has used EzriCare or another brand, Delsym Pharma Artificial Tears, to stop using them immediately.

If you have used these products and experience symptoms such as yellow, green, or clear discharge, eye pain, discomfort, redness, feeling like there’s something in your eye, increased sensitivity to light, or blurry vision, seek medical attention right away.

This is a developing story, and more information may become available as investigations continue.

In the meantime, the CDC urges the public to take this warning seriously and take precautions to protect their vision and health.
