The Mayor of Apopka, Florida has called for the Fire Chief to be fired following the death of firefighter Austin Duran.

There have been demands for the Chief’s resignation due to alleged lack of action in response to the tragedy.

The community and council members are speaking up and demanding change in leadership.

A report commissioned from Gannon Emergency Solutions recommended increasing safety training and funding for health and safety improvements, as well as appointing a change manager, which the Chief proposed handling himself but was shot down by the council.

Despite hiring 18 more firefighters and two assistant Chiefs, there is still a lack of confidence in the Chief’s ability to fix the problems within the department.

The Duran family has been pushing for improvements and when they finally happen, they hope to be able to grieve and move forward.

The Fire Chief has promised to send over a strategic plan on April 3rd.
