California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a partnership with a non-profit generic drug maker, Civica, which will offer insulin at just $30.
Under the $50 million, 10-year contract, the state’s generic drug label, Cal RX, will sell Civica’s three versions of insulin used by diabetics.
The deal is expected to save diabetes patients hundreds of dollars, as a typical 10 milliliter vial of insulin costs around $300.
Three major drug makers recently announced price cuts to their insulin products, but California sued them for driving up the cost of the critical diabetes drug.
The FDA must approve the Cal RX generic drug before doctors can prescribe it and insurance companies can accept it.
Despite this, Newsom says he is proud of the insulin partnership and is looking for more opportunities to help patients, such as producing the overdose medication, naloxone, or Narcan.
