California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced plans to turn San Quentin State Prison, which currently houses the highest number of death row inmates in the country, into a rehabilitation center.
The facility will focus on providing education, training, and other forms of rehabilitation to prisoners.
The governor will be visiting the prison as part of his tour of the state, during which he will discuss his criminal justice plans.
Governor Newsom’s press office has stated that he will be revealing more details about the plans to shift San Quentin from a maximum security facility to a center for education and training within the prison system.
San Quentin, which was once home to the largest death row in the nation, had its execution chamber dismantled four years ago on the orders of Governor Newsom.
