A Massachusetts man accused of trying to stab a flight attendant on a Boston-bound flight earlier this week appeared in federal court today.

Francisco Severo Torres, 32, of Leominster, Massachusetts, was ordered by Federal Judge Judith Dean to undergo a mental health evaluation and a competency hearing.

Torres faces a charge of interference and attempted interference with flight crew members and attendants using a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors say he tried to open a Boston-bound plane’s emergency door and then attempted to stab a flight attendant with a broken spoon.

Torres is currently being detained at Wyatt detention facility in Central Falls.

Prosecutors said in court Torres attacked a guard there this week and had to be restrained.

He will face a penalty of up to a $250,000 fine and potentially life in prison if found guilty.
