Earlier today, we received updates regarding a tragic incident involving the loss of an Austin police officer who was fatally shot while on duty during a SWAT standoff over the weekend. The fallen officer has been identified as Jorge Pastor, and the incident occurred just before 3:00 a.m.
on Saturday. The Austin Police Department responded to a report of a potential shooting and stabbing at a residence.
Upon arrival, a survivor who had managed to escape informed the officers that the suspect was still inside, armed with a knife, and holding two individuals hostage. Efforts were made to enter the premises, but the suspect drew a gun and opened fire. Eventually, SWAT was called in, and despite their attempts to enter the residence once more, the suspect continued to shoot, injuring two officers, including Officer Pastor. Despite the tireless efforts of our officers, EMS medics, the Austin Fire Department, and hospital staff, Officer Pastor sadly succumbed to his injuries.
The other injured officer is currently in stable condition. In response to the immediate threat, the officers fatally shot the suspect.
Tragically, the two hostages also lost their lives at the scene. Officer Pastor leaves behind his wife, two stepsons, parents, and two sisters. It remains unknown how the suspect and victims are related or what circumstances led to the initial 911 call..
