Currently, we are witnessing the aftermath of a devastating fire at an Atlanta apartment complex. It has been approximately 36 hours since the fire began, and First Responders are still at the scene. Erica Murphy has been reporting on this story throughout the weekend and joins us live from the Reserve at Lista walk.
We have received information that arrests have been made in relation to the fire. A man and a woman have been taken into custody in connection with this destructive inferno.
The fire started on Friday night around 10:30 PM, and firefighters quickly arrived with assistance from the Sandy Springs Fire Department. Upon speaking with some of the residents who were displaced, it was suggested that a woman celebrating her birthday with fireworks on the rooftop may have been responsible for the fire.
However, it is now confirmed that a man and woman have been arrested. They are facing charges of criminal damage to property and reckless conduct.
The fire has displaced numerous families and forced one business to close due to power loss. Efforts are being made to restore power, including the use of generators. It is essential to note that the original pancake house, which has approximately $112,000 worth of perishable food, remains closed. However, their power has recently been restored.
In response to the displaced families, the Red Cross and the city have collaborated to establish a temporary shelter at the Central Park Recreation Center. They have assured that they will continue assisting those in need until they are back on their feet. This fire has significantly impacted the entire block in the city of Atlanta..
