A man has been arrested in connection with a suspected hate crime on the Toronto subway.

The incident took place near Wilson Station, when a woman was allegedly targeted because of her Muslim faith and threatened with a knife.

The suspect, 47-year-old Philip J Fenton, has been charged with assault with a weapon and another crime.

The woman fled the subway train and reported the incident to police, who released a photo of the suspect.

Fatima Abdallah with the National Council of Canadian Muslim said that the incident was a reminder of the need to be vigilant when outside the home, while Imam Farhan Iqbal said that despite targeted displays of hatred, he continues to choose love.

The arrest has been met with a mixture of fear, disheartened feelings, and hope among passengers.
