San Ramon police are investigating a “smash-and-grab” armed robbery at a jewelry store in the city center Bishop Ranch shopping center on Bollinger Canyon Road.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon at about 2:45 pm when a group of armed robbers stormed into Heller Jewelers, smashed display cases, and made off with valuables.
A witness reported that the robbery happened very quickly, and the security guard was confronted at gunpoint.
Witnesses at a nearby restaurant immediately called the police and told workers to secure their doors.
The robbers fled in at least two cars, an orange Dodge Charger and a Jeep Cherokee, heading in opposite directions.
The incident has shocked shoppers, and San Ramon Police are comparing notes with other law enforcement agencies in hopes of catching the robbers.
The store remained closed to the public on Saturday, and police were a visible presence in the area.
