An Arizona family has been fined $500 for an apparent abandoned car that they sold off years ago.

The family received a notice months ago that told them to pay the fine and that their MVC account was blocked.

They knew it was just a paperwork problem, but they kept hitting roadblocks until an investigative news team got involved.

The family had sold their 2007 Chevy Cobalt to a scrapper, and Bruce Matthews had helped his daughter with the sale.

They had sent a notice to the motor vehicle department that the vehicle had been sold and had signed the title over to the salvage company.

However, they had recently tossed the old paperwork related to that car sale, and it had been five years since they needed it.

MVD investigated and found that the right things were done by signing the back of the title, but the title was not submitted to MVD to get reprocessed and retitled.

MVD wiped away the fine, and the family was relieved that the case was resolved in a positive manner.

When selling a vehicle, it is important to make sure it is completely out of your name to avoid any issues in the future.
