A 25-year-old woman has been arrested for attempted murder and felony child abuse after a newborn baby was found inside a restroom trash can at a gas station in Fullerton.
The woman, identified as Fullerton resident Venissa Maldonado, is now in police custody.
The baby was found yesterday and is hospitalized in critical condition but stable.
Police remind everyone that California has a safely surrendered baby law, which allows a parent or person with custody to safely surrender a baby confidentially and without fear of prosecution within 72 hours of birth.
The law requires the baby to be taken to a hospital or designated fire station or any other Safe Surrender site, really no questions asked.
The law exists for a reason, and police are urging people to take advantage of it.
